Lafayette’s Community Information & Emergency Radio Station AM 1670
The City of Lafayette operates a community information and emergency radio station licensed by the FCC that broadcasts 24/7 in the AM broadcast band throughout the region at 1670 kHz. The station is built to provide news and information about the City of Lafayette that people can listen to at any time. The radio station will broadcast vital information, such as evacuation orders, during emergencies, such as power outages, wildfires, and other disasters. Lafayette’s radio station can provide you with vital information through a battery-powered or car AM radio if the power is out and the internet or cell phone service is down.

Be Prepared!

Make a disaster less likely:

  • Fire-safe your home by properly storing flammable supplies, keeping your landscaping in defensible space, and keeping exits clear.
  • By securing the water heater, heavy furniture, bookshelves, etc., your home is earthquake-ready. Where possible, do structural upgrades.

Make a family disaster plan:

  • Discuss what events are most likely to occur with your families, e.g.: earthquakes, fires of structure and plants, mudslides, blocked roads, power outages, etc.
Practice DUCK, COVER, AND HOLD and know the safest part of each room.
  • Learn the SHELTER IN PLACE rules Come inside, close the windows and the doors. Turn the ventilation off. For directions, listen to the radio (KCBS 740).
  • Discuss alternate evacuation routes.
Plan two meeting places, one inside and one outside your neighborhood.
  • Designate an out-of-state family contact and send the number to all members of the family.

Prepare a Disaster Supply Kit sufficient for 3 days:

  • Water-3 gallons per family member
  • Work gloves, pry bar
  • Manual can opener
  • Non-perishable canned and packaged food
  • Change of clothing, rain gear, sturdy shoes
  • Blankets or sleeping bags
  • First aid kit, prescription medications, eyeglasses
  • Special criteria, such as baby supplies, pet food,
  • Radio with battery capacity, flashlights, and plenty of new batteries

One of the most successful ways available to address problems within the community is the Neighborhood Watch, Community Service and Problem-Solving Program. Your block will eradicate violence from your neighborhood by coordinated problem-solving operations and tackle any community concerns that affect residents.

The program of Neighborhood Watch depends on the best instrument ever invented-a good neighbor. Fortunately, everywhere, good neighbors are found. Neighborhood Watch isn’t the job of the guard. It focuses on community concerns, developing community action groups, getting to know the neighbors, and seeking solutions to problems in the neighborhood. Some resolutions include being conscious of suspicious behavior and knowing what to do about it, and protecting your property efficiently, and establishing a contact network for the community.

  • Neighborhood Watch is a collaboration between the police and the community and an interactive process by which residents can learn to address neighborhood problems.

It involves:

  • Neighbors learn to know one another and work together in a mutual assistance program.
  • People are being trained in their communities to detect and report suspicious activity.
  • Implementation of strategies for crime prevention, such as home protection, detection of operations, etc.

It’s classified as NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH, Home Warning, Citizen Crime Watch, or Block Watch. The principle is that the same neighbors look out for each other.
